‘Hope for Change’

A new project aiming to empower young women to make a difference to the barriers they face with their mental health.

My name is Liani I am the newly employed Young Women’s Participation worker at Arch Teesside. I have always been passionate in supporting changes and young people. I hold experience in developing projects in the youth sector and have been a regional young ambassador which would see me working across local authorities to research the main barriers in the areas and support changes. I am looking forward to the Hope for Change project, and as a young woman myself I see the importance of empowering young women to reduce the obstacles to support services.

As the Young Women’s Participation Worker, I am leading on the development of the project that’s aim is to give the voices of young women aged 16-25 a platform in relation to Mental Health provision in the area. The project will focus on improving and influencing mental health provision and aims to reduce barriers to support/services for young women aged between 16-25 years.  I want to encourage and support young women to share their experiences and express their views on mental health care; care they have received and what changes they would like to see.  My role is to facilitate the work, but the women involved will be central to the project.

The Agenda research completed in 2020 shows that poor mental health is a serious and growing problem among young women. Young women aged between 16-24 are showing to be 3 times more likely to have a common mental health problem like anxiety or depression- than their male counterparts. The statistics stated are only few to show the need for change to reduce the barriers to accessing mental health support.

Leaflets and posters have been distributed in local services such as community hubs to ensure that the projects information is shared amongst young women. If you are 16-25 and would like to support change to accessing mental health services, we would like to hear from you. You can refer into the project by emailing l.weston@archteesside.org or by scanning the QR code that is attached to the posters and completing the short participation form.
